Helping hand to cancer patients

The Sri Lanka College of Oncologists, represented by President Dr. A.J Hilmi and Indira Cancer Trust, represented by Chairperson/Trustee Dr Lanka Jayasuriya Dissanayake, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last Sunday (19).

The MOU re-affirms and formalises the long-standing partnership between the two agencies to support patients with cancer including the provision of natural hair wigs to patients commencing chemotherapy at the hospital where treatment is administered.

Indira Cancer Trust has been providing customised natural hair wigs for patients with cancer since the start of the programme in 2017 and to date have given over 1500 wigs. This partnership will ensure that patients who receive chemotherapy obtain a wig before hair loss is experienced. Hair loss is an inevitable and detrimental side effect to patients and causes immense grief leading to a totally changed lifestyle.

The formal launch of the National Programme will be announced in October.
