Ministry of Consumer Affairs to regulate delivery charges

In view of complaints made to the Consumer Affairs Authority by consumers against the prices charged by the delivery services, a decision has been taken to introduce a system to regulate the charges.

State Minister in charge of Consumer Affairs Lasantha Alagiyawanna discussed with delivery service providers (DSP) such as Ubereats, Pickme etc and the business community to get hands on information on pricing, pricing policy and its reasonableness, the Ministry said.

Accordingly a decision was taken to register DSPs with the Consumer Affairs Authority and regulate to ensure reasonable prices and to formulate a policy on calculation of commissions and transport charges and impose a reasonable cap for selected sub-sectors.

A large number of complaints had been received by the Consumer Affairs Authority about the exorbitant charges by regular delivery services. Some of them charge as much as Rs 100 per food pack or other items.
