AG not given 22 volumes of CoI report due to ’’sensitive info on national security’’

News

The Attorney General has received 65 volumes of evidence recorded in proceedings of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) on the Easter Sunday attacks.

While the CoI had handed over 87 volumes to the Presidential Secretariat, 22 of these volumes have not been given to the Attorney General as per the advice of the CoI on the grounds that they contained "sensitive information on national security," AG's Coordinating Secretary, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said.

She added that the AG had noted that he was determined to file charges against suspects swiftly and efficiently based on thousands of pages of investigation reports into the eight bomb blasts, more than 30, 000 pages of material of the CoI's report and the evidence recorded by the Parliamentary Select Committee that probed the attacks, while also considering the necessity of conducting further investigations.

The AG however, had observed that it may take a significant amount of time for this due to it being a collective effort.
