The Central Bank on Monday cancelled a media conference called at 2 pm to discuss “"New measures taken to strengthening the stability in the Domestic Foreign Exchange Market" after protests turned to violence in the city.
Peaceful protests by anti-government supporters outside Temple Trees, official residence of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, were attacked by pro-Mahinda supporters on Monday morning. The same group then attacked the anti-government protest site in Galle Face, which led to clashes between the two sides.
The crisis led to the PM tendering his resignation and the government clamping down an islandwide curfew.
Thousands of people have been protesting for weeks demanding the President, Prime Minister and the government quit over the country’s economic crisis which has led to queues for fuel, cooking gas and other essentials.
