Expert committee on setting up judicial training academy

News

Cabinet has granted approval to a proposal tabled by Justice Minister Ali Sabry to appoint a committee of experts to obtain recommendations for the establishment of a judicial training academy within Sri Lanka.

The committee will be headed by Supreme Court Justice Buwaneka Aluvihare.

While the Judges' Institute is serving as the only establishment for education within the judicial system of the country, the assistance from the institute is not satisfactory when it comes to providing sufficient training to the judges, the Government Information Department claimed in a press release. It noted that in most countries, there are institutions equivalent to universities with facilities to educate and train judges.

The government has given priority to upgrade and develop the infrastructure facilities in the judiciary along with legal reforms and promotion of digitalisation. It has also recognized the requirement of furnishing facilities required for upgrading knowledge and skills of judges, the release added.
