ICTA chairman Oshada Senanayake resigns

Chairman of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) Oshada Senanayake has tendered his resignation amidst confusion and impact on the IT sector at present.

Mr. Senanayake tweeted saying that he vehemently stands by his principles and ethos he believes in.

“After almost 2.5 years of contributing for the digital journey of the country by taking a break from my private sector career which I firmly believe was the best way for the country’s economic revival, I have tendered my resignation formally last week from ICTA as well following my stepping down of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) last December which could come in to effect from end of the month,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude to everyone for all the support extended to his work during stint which hopefully will go a step towards enabling the next generation.

The country is currently facing Internet interruptions while broad band users facing a downtime or slow Internet due to a downtime in Internet Structure.

This has greatly affected the IT sector which has become one of the main foreign exchange earners at present. Further the country’s social media has been restricted by the government as a preventive measure of public protests against burning issues in the country.

Social media platform restrictions are being enforced by the TRC. These platforms including facebook and whatsapp were suspended on Sunday by the authorities.

The main aim of the barricading of social media plat forms was to prevent calling unknown groups to gather the people on Sunday in protest demonstrations country wide, informed sources said, adding that a curfew from 6 pm on Saturday to 6 am on Monday was enforced for the same purpose.
