An attempt by University students to march towards the President's House was prevented by the Police and the Special Task Force today evening.
Police used tear gas and water canons to prevent the students marching their way through the Bank of Ceylon Mawatha towards the President's House.
After several rounds of tear gas were used the students regrouped and returned, eventually the STF and the riot squad was deploying forcing the students to withdraw,
Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said that by 5.30 p.m the students had been forced to withdraw.
