A decision will be made today to permit bus operators to increase the minimum bus fare to Rs.40, a senior Transport Ministry official said.
He said bus owners have requested to increase bus fares by 30 percent starting from July 01 and the minimum fare increased to Rs. 40.
However, the decision will be made by the National Transport Commission following further discussion with relevant parties.
Yesterday, a meeting was held between Minister Bandula Gunewardena and bus operators. Private Bus Owners Association President Gemunu Wijeratne said the number of operating private buses has decreased by 10 percent today. He said a 30 percent increase was needed to meet the fuel price increase and rise in the prices of vehicle spare parts.
