More rice to be imported from Myanmar

News

The government is to import rice from Myanmar with a kilogram costing over Rs 93, according to a Trade Ministry proposal.

Accordingly,  the proposal which was approved by the Cabinet, a metric ton of rice (1000 Kgs) is to be purchased for USD 460. Approval was given by the cabinet to import 20,000 metric tons of rice which will cost the government over Rs nine million.

The purchase will be made under a government to government agreement with Myanmar. The government, however, has not disclosed the price at which the rice will be sold.

These imports will be in addition to the 100,000 Mt for which approval was received for imports two months back. The moves come amidst a drop in paddy harvest in the last season due to the fertiliser crisis.

Meanwhile, rice prices have been rising in the markets. A kilogram of Red kekulu which was selling at Rs 99 per KG now sells at 112 at supper markets and is higher in other outlets.
