A Police Sub Inspector (SI) was killed and another suffered serious injuries when their vehicle crashed into the gate of a level crossing in Kantale last night.
Police said a car carrying the victims, which was proceeding towards the Kantale police station along the Kantale-Muttur Road, lost control near the level crossing and crashed into the gate.
The driver of the vehicle and the passenger in the front seat both suffered serious injuries in the incident and were admitted to the Kantale Hospital. Both were Sub Inspectors attached to the Kantale police station. However, the passenger was declared dead on admission.
The deceased was identified as a 55-year-old resident of Galle. His remains currently lie at the Kantale Hospital and Kantale Police are conducting further investigations.
