President orders officials to prevent future shortages of essential goods

The President has advised Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna to monitor and ensure essential goods are not sold to the public at exorbitant prices.

At present long queues are seen in front of dairy outlets with people standing for hours to purchase powdered milk while shortage of rice and wheat flour is witnessed in retail markets.

Minister Alagiyawanna said the government had to remove the price control imposed on milk powder, wheat flour, gas and cement due to global price increases. The decision was taken at a special Cabinet meeting yesterday (7).
