A probe on the  murder of a retired 69 year old US naval electrical engineer, Chitrananda Jayaratne, is underway by the Melsiripura Police. 

On Monday (October 24) the Police found his dead body buried in his garden, while investigating a complaint on his missing on October 13.

A day later the body of the domestic aide of the retired Engineer was found hanging in the kitchen of the house.

Having retired from the US Navy, Mr. Jayaratne, had returned to Sri Lanka, where he maintained close connections with his relatives and lived alone in his ancestral house, situated in Reswatta, Melsiripura. 

Three months before the murder, he had hired a 43 year old resident of Wellawa as a domestic aide to help him in his work in the house and garden. 

On October 13, the Melsiripura Police received a complaint from  Mr. Jayaratne’s cousin that he had gone missing. The Police then had repeatedly visited the house  and questioned the domestic who claimed that Mr. Jayaratne had gone to Anuradhapura on a tour. 

On last Sunday, when the Police went on an investigation to the house, the servant was found hanging from a beam in the kitchen, which was later confirmed to be a suicide. 

The following day, a group of Police investigating the garden surrounding the house, discovered the dead body of Mr. Jayaratne buried, suspected to be a murder committed, with the deceased domestic aide serving as a primary suspect. 

The dead body is held at the place of the incident under Police observation, while the Magistrate investigation and the post-mortem examination is to be held on Tuesday.
