Area residents held a protest in front the Karuwalagaswewa Pradeshiya Sabha yesterday against the alleged assault on an individual by the Chairman of the PS.
The victim has been identified as a retired army sergeant major named D. Jayaratne.
He had allegedly been assaulted by the Karuwalagaswewa PS Chairman on February 26. Mr Jayaratne said the reason for the assault was because the PS Chairman had become annoyed after he raised issue with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Gama Samgama Pilisandara (Dialogue with the Village) programme held at Nelumgama in Karuwalagaswewa on February 20 over the failure to repair the Weerapura Road in Karuwalagaswewa for 50 years.
The victim and around 50 residents of his village held a protest opposite the Karuwalagaswewa PS premises yesterday over the assault.
Police said the suspect PS Chairman, Nimal Jayasiri Bandara, was arrested and has been released on police bail.
