Several fatal road accidents were reported from Kahathuduwa, Muttur, Polgahawela, Galewela and Chavakachcheri on Tuesday (5), police said.
A 62-year-old woman was hit by a speeding bus while crossing the road at Rilawala junction on the Colombo-Horana road. Similarly, a speeding bus hit a pedestrian in Muttur. The 70-year-old woman died from severe injuries caused by the accident.
A 61-year-old pedestrian from Chavakachcheri was hit by a speeding cab heading from Kandy to Jaffna. According to police, the injured person died on admission to Chavakachcheri hospital. Another speeding cab collided with a motorbike in Polgahawela on the Colombo-Kurunegala road killing the 19-year-old motorbike rider.
A 26-year-old person from Kinniya died when the fuel bowser he was travelling in hit a lorry at Ibbankatuwa area on the Ambepussa-Trincomalee road, police said.
