SL estate managers protest against attacks by workers

Sri Lankan planters (estate managers) have come out in a show of solidarity on Wednesday against the recent attacks by workers carried out on a number of planters in different estates and on the day the Alton Estate case is being taken up at the Hatton Courts.

The silent protest against the attacks on estate superintendents and assistant superintendents has resulted in estates insisting that their security is at stake and that they require police protection against the workers that reside on the estates.

Around 650 planters have gathered from around the country, Ceylon Planters Society (CPS) President Dayal Kumarage told the Business Times while participating at the silent protest on Wednesday at the Hatton Mliyappu junction.

Advisor to the CPS Jeewan Warusavithana said the silent protest is held to urge the government and political parties to ensure the safety and security of the planters who are the people safeguarding the plantations.

“We are not fighting for anything,” he explained adding that although at present only three cases have so far been reported there are a number of other incidents that have occurred on the estates. (Sunimalee)
