The Vavuniya High Court today acquitted a life-sentenced university teacher detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) after the Court of Appeal quashed the life sentence last year.
K.Kannadasan, a lecturer attached to the University of Jaffna was remanded over the charges of allegedly recruiting child soldiers for the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during wartime.
Even after the CoA quashed his life sentence last year, the Attorney General (AG) department sought permission to continue another separate PTA case filed at Vavuniya High Court. At that time, CoA granted approval for continuing the case.
When the case was taken up for hearing today at Vavuniya High Court, senior AG department officials requested Court to withdraw the charge sheet filed at the Court and sought Court permission to file a fresh one.
M.A. Sumanthiran PC, assisted by Attorney at Law K.Sayanthan appeared on behalf of the university teacher.
Sumanthiran PC challenged the request from the AG department saying that CoA granted approval only to continue the case with the existing charge sheet before the Courts, not to file a fresh one. (Pix by N.Lohathayalan)
