Restrictions imposed on vehicle imports will continue till the first six months of next year (2022), Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal said.
Mr. Cabraal told Timesonline that Sri Lanka’s foreign reserve situation will be monitored prior to looking into the possibility of allowing vehicle imports.
“Even if allowed, it will be category-wise. In order to permit all vehicle imports, the country needs to reach the five billion US dollar income generated from the tourism industry,” he said.
Earlier in the day, the Central Bank announced that Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves with expected foreign currency inflows has reached around US$3.1 billion, and is expected to remain at such levels by end of 2021.
