Weekend trains for tourists :Minister

Issuing a stamp to mark India's independence day, establishing a Chartered Institute for Professional Journalists, and introduction of special train services over the weekend for tourists were among proposals approved by the Cabinet this week, Media Minister Bandula Gunawardena said today.

Minister Gunawardena addressing the weekly cabinet news conference said a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed for the issue of an independence day stamp in collaboration of the Sri Lanka Postal Department with the Postal Department of India. 

Accordingly, in commemoration of the “historical victory” of both countries against the British, the stamps are to be issued representing the Parliament - “the pinnacle of democracy”. 

As for the preparations for the 75th Independence Day, a committee, including the President, the Prime Minister and a few of the cabinet ministers has been appointed. . 

Another proposal to establish a chartered institute for media professionals in Sri Lanka, similar to the Chartered Institute for Accountants, was also approved. 

Through this institute, it is expected to create a young generation of knowledgeable media personnel who protect the ethics of the profession, and to make the profession more respectable. 

 

While it is decided to conduct the institute independent of Government influences, the basic activities have already been conducted by a committee consisting of professionals and the secretary of the Ministry, he said.. 

Minister Gunawardana who is also in charge of the subject of Tourism  commented on the current project of establishing special trains on the weekends, of which the Jaffna Night Rider and the Ella train are already operational

A special train bound to Kataragama through Beliatta and a weekend train to Anuradhapura primarily for pilgrimage purposes, which can be travelled collectively, is also due to be launched.. 

Another weekend tourist train to Pasikuda through Kandy is scheduled to be commenced in the first week of next month, where the private sector is expected to provide restaurant and hygienic services. 

While these train services are expected to provide a low-cost service for tourists, the Ministry is currently discussing the transportation of goods via trains as well.
