The Secretary General of Parliament has informed the Chairman of the Elections Commission that the MP post of United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Galle District Parliamentarian Geetha Kumarasinghe has been annulled in line with a verdict by the Court of Appeal.
The Court of Appeal gave a ruling on May 3 that Ms Kumarasinghe could not function as an MP as she held duel citizenship. The verdict was given after hearing a petition filed by several individuals who challenged her right to be an MP.
The petitioners argued that in addition to being a Sri Lankan citizen, Ms Kumarasinghe also held citizenship in Switzerland.
Under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, a person holding duel citzenship cannot be an MP.
Ms Kumarasinghe has indicated that she intends to challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court.
