Govt. says will not make representations to UNHRC after 2019

News

The Government does not intend to continue making representations to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva beyond 2019, Minister of Special Assignments Dr Sarath Amunugama said today.

Speaking at a media briefing at Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Headquarters, Minister Amunugama, who was part of the Government's delegation to Geneva at the recently concluded session of the UNHRC, pointed out that by 2019, it'll be 10 years since the war in the country ended. "We have no reason to keep going to Geneva to present our case as defendents. We have taken many positive decisions over the years. The court system is now independent. In light of this, we oppose continually going to Geneva. We want to bring this to a closure."

The Minister said the Foreign Ministry needs to be instructed to brief its diplomats in overseas missions to convey this message to host countries.

He added that the country could resolve its own problems and there is no reason for there to be interference from outside.
