One of the main suspects alleged to have conspired to instigate violence and cause communal disharmony during recent violent disturbances in the Kandy district has been arrested along with nine others by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID), police announced this evening.
Police Spokesman Superintendent of Police (SP) Ruwan Gunasekara said the 10 suspects were taken into custody from Poojapitiya in Digana this morning by a TID team led by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police.
He identified the main suspect as Amith Jeewan Weerasinghe. Also arrested was his close associate Suredha Suraweera and eight others.
Up until 6am today (8), a further 71 individuals have been arrested by various police stations in the Kandy district in relation to criminal incidents that occurred from the night of March 4. Accordingly, 81 suspects are so far in custody over the violent incidents which have occurred in Kandy.
