News

A Sri Lankan national has died while in custody at a detention centre for two days in Lucerne, Switzerland last evening, Swissinfo reported yesterday (May 06).

The man was seen to be in "physical distress" inside the detention centre, by police officers who were monitoring him through CCTV cameras, according to the news report.

Authorities investigating the incident had cited "acute" health problems for the man's death while Lucerne’s public prosecutor's office said that the he had died on the spot despite an attempt to immediately resusitate him.

The public prosecutor's office also noted that the man had been examined by a doctor before being permitted to serve his short prison sentence.

"The court shall impose an alternative custodial sentence of at least one day and a maximum of three months for the event that the fine is wilfully not paid." states Article 106 of the Swiss criminal code
